Is It Compulsory By Law In Uk To Get Home Insurance Before Moving Into New Rented House?

I am moving into a new house that is rented in Cambridge uk.It is a house share with one more person.
Is it compulsory by law to get home insurance before I move into this house?
Also, if anyone is aware of any good home insurance can you guide me please?
