    No, it is not compulsory.
It is entirely up to you, since they are your belongings in the house, and if they are stolen or damaged then it’s your loss.

Your landlord would normally take out buildings insurance, however check the small print in your rental contract to ensure that this responsibility has not been passed to you. (query it if this is the case)
It’s up to you whether you wish to take out contents insurance, although you would be wise to do so in case of theft/damage etc.
It is not a legal requirement for you to have insurance.

No it is not compulsory, but it would be very adviseable to get home insurance for any rented accommodation which you are going to occupy. If not and (God forbid) there is ever a fire, then you might be faced with a whopping big bill, plus monster legal costs etc. Not worth the risk.
Other thing, when buying your home insurance policy, make sure you are covered for every possibility, including flood and fire damage etc. You also want to ensure that your policy covers any legal costs which you might be faced with in the event something goes wrong.
Also, please be aware that insurance companies do not pay out if the locks on the property where you are living are not up to their standard. They may insist upon a double action lock on the front door, for example. They will certainly insist on locks for all of the windows etc.

If you are not sure of the wording of a given policy, ask for a copy of said policy and take it to your nearest Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) where you can get ‘free’ legal and general advice etc.

P.S. just in passing, the British people are the most heavily insured on Earth – we ain’t stupid and we know our house will get struck by lightning, even if it is 500 years old and never been struck before. Right?
